Pilanesberg Game Reserve
The closest Big Five game reserve to OR Tambo and Johannesburg — a 3-hour drive or 2 hours direct. Set in the crater of an extinct volcano, Pilanesberg offers self-drive or guided game drives through 55,000 hectares of bushveld. Lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo and leopard all call this reserve home.
Komdraai Gold Mine
An authentic, working gold mine offering guided tours that take you through the history of South Africa's gold rush and explain the extraction process. FNB Stadium (Soccer City)
Africa's largest stadium with a capacity of 94,000 — host of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Final where Spain defeated the Netherlands. Stadium tours are available and give access to the field, the dressing rooms, the media zone, and the spectacular calabash-inspired exterior. Book ahead on match days.
Ndebele Cultural Village — Botshabelo
The Ndebele people are celebrated for their extraordinary geometric art and brilliantly coloured house-painting tradition. The Botshabelo Open-Air Museum and Living Village allows visitors to observe this living art form, meet artisans, and purchase authentic hand-painted crafts directly from the community.
Kruger National Park
South Africa's flagship national park and one of the greatest wildlife reserves on Earth. Over 2 million hectares of bushveld, 147 mammal species, 500+ bird species. Best visited as a 2–4 night trip from OR Tambo. Fly to Hoedspruit (HDS) for a 45-minute door-to-bush option, or drive the scenic Panorama Route.
